'The Matchstick Man' is a feature length
screenplay based on the true life story of Welsh bantamweight
champion, Johnny Owen. From his humble beginnings as a sick,
frail infant to his meteoric rise through the ranks of boxing to
become the undisputed champion of the bantamweight division in
Britain, Europe and the Commonwealth. His fists ruled half the world; the
ultimate dream was in his sights - to become WORLD CHAMPION.
This is the tale of a gentle, determined and
unique man motivated by an incredibly supportive family,
friends, community and nation. Johnny Owen's character and
integrity couldn't be further from the perceived view of that of
a typical boxer. His broad appeal was quite extraordinary.
This is not a tragic story, but a true story
of the triumph of the spirit and that of the poetic grace of an
unique individual who was a champion boxer, but more importantly
was a champion amongst men. 'The Matchstick Man' is, above all,
a human drama of a boxing legend from South Wales.
